Special Education or Special Needs Education in St Louis Community School is the practice of educating students with special needs in a way that addresses their individual differences and needs. Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, accessible settings. These interventions are designed to help learners with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and their community, than may be available if the student were only given access to a typical classroom education. Whereas special education is designed specifically for students with special needs, remedial education can be designed for any students, with or without special needs; the defining trait is simply that they have reached a point of under preparedness, regardless of why.

The Special Needs Assistant provides care assistance to named students who have special educational needs. Our SNA’S Ms. Marie Waters, Ms. Rosaleen Donoghue, Ms Michelle Durkin, Ms. Laura O’Sullivan, Ms. Betty Cox and Ms. Leanne Gill make very valuable contributions to St. Louis Community Schools capacity to provide inclusive education to these students. The Special Educational Needs Team and SENCO work collaboratively in devising an appropriate strategy plan for a student with special educational needs. The SNA is made aware of this plan and given guidance on their role in the successful implementation of this plan. The Special Needs Assistant plays an important role in the health and safety of the student and in their social, emotional and educational development. It is important that the Special Needs Assistant supports student participation in school life without developing a culture of dependency.
